Sharp Aquos S2 to Launch Soon in India, Android Alternative to All-screen iPhone X
ast month, the Japanese smartphone manufacturer Sharp has launched its latest bezel-less smartphone called Aquos S2 in China. While many other companies are launching their first bezel-less smartphone in 2017, the Aquos S2 is the company’s 25th smartphone to feature an all-screen display. While the Apple’s latest iPhone X features an all-screen display with a rectangular cutout for a bunch of sensors, the Sharp Aquos S2 comes with a circular cutout. Unlike the iPhone X, there is a thin bezel beneath the display of the Aquos S2 which sports a physical home button with integrated fingerprint sensor.
The device comes with a metal frame and glass body. It will be available in Black, White, Blue, and Mint Blue color options. The Aquos S2 runs on the latest Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box with the in-house Smile UX UI laid on top. The company is also offering the RoboS AI that was first introduced with the Sharp’s RoBoHon launched last year in Japan. On the front of the Aquos S2 is a 5.5-inch free-form display that offers Full HD+ (20140 x 1080 pixels) resolution and 550 nits of brightness. In China, the Aquos S2 launched in two different variants powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 and Snapdragon 660 processors.
The high-end variant comes powered by the Snapdragon 660 processor that uses the custom Kryo cores and is built using the 14nm architecture. The other variant includes the Snapdragon 630 processor that uses the Cortex-A53 cores. While the Snapdragon 630 powered variant offers 4GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage, the Snapdragon 660 powered variant packs 6GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage. There is also a MicroSD card slot for further expansion of storage. In the camera department, there is a dual camera setup featuring 12MP and 8MP sensors that offer f/1.75 aperture and PDAF.
The dual sensors are placed vertically as seen on the iPhone X. For selfies, there is also an 8MP sensor on the front with f/2.0 aperture. It is backed by a 3.020mAh non-removable battery that supports 5V/2A fast charging using the USB Type-C port. It measures 141.8 x 72.04 x 7.9 mm and weighs 140 grams. Connectivity options include 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, NFC, and a USB Type-C port. Both the volume rocker and power button are placed on the right edge of the device. The Aquos S2 will soon go on sale in India and the pricing will be revealed on the launch day.
Both the variants of the Sharp Aquos S2 are on sale in China. The 4GB RAM variant costs 2499 Yuan (approx $372 / Rs. 24,000) while the high-end variant with 6GB RAM will be sold for 3499 Yuan (approx $520 / Rs. 33,000). Talking about the iPhone X pricing, the base variant with 64GB storage is priced at Rs. 89,000 and the 256GB storage variant comes with a price tag of Rs. 1,02,000. With the Android OS and mid-range specifications, the Sharp Aquos S2 will be costing less than Rs. 30,000 in India.
